Womenswear For Men…The Season on the Manzie

“Menswear should take cues from womenswear, and not just the other way around,” says Muccia Prada in BlackBook. Now, you all know how much I love to trash a good manzie (click to get official meaning). It has been eons since I did a session on that “look”, which confuses many of my readers, while providing many good laughs. “But, Muccia, what items in womenswear can men pull off without looking like big, nelly queens?”, I Mean…What!?! wants to know. Leggings for starters.

When womenwear items do not work on men.

When womenwear items do not work on men.

Leggings have been on trend and a huge best-seller for the past few seasons. But on guys? Hmmm. Leggings, though comfy, look preposterous on men (see picture above), unless you are young, thin and gorgeous (see picture below).

He can wear leggings. I cannot. I wouldn't even wear them to the gym. THose guuys look ridic. And those bicylclists need to relax with their head to toe spandex nonsense. You're not Lance Armstrong, Mary.

What about skirts? Muccia Prada did mini-skirts in the past. How many of those do you think she sold? Not even a manzie would buy that. Well, maybe Bobby Trendy. I am sure there is a segment of the straight or straight-acting male population that could pull off the ‘men in skirts’ look and not draw unnecessary attention to themselves. Alan Cumming (a Scotsman) and Marc Jacobs have donned skirts on many a red carpet and seem perfectly comfortable. (I, on the other hand, would be so self conscious, I would plotz.) Don’t get me wrong, I would love to send the rest of my life wearing a dishdasha (a.k.a. moo-moo gown), but I digress. Actually, here are a couple of photos as seen on Huffington Post that I will share with you on featuring straight and straight-acting gays wearing skirts. Maybe, just maybe, Muccia might hit the mark this season with the Prada Manzie Collection, Fall 09. I cannot wait.

Sting almost pulls the look off. Not swacked on the navy knee-highs. And wondering if this skirt is a tad to voluminous.

James McAvoy looks fantastic. The again, young, thin, gorgeouos, what can't they pull off.

Stone Phillips in head to toe lilac...not tragic.

Aww, cute. Matching skirts. But agian...doesn't seem unnatural. Maybe we should all move to Scotland and call it a day.

I don't see skirts as a womenswear only. If my history teacher was right so men were first wearing skirts because women had to wear long dresses only. Romans and Greeks wore skirts and the kilts are coming from those kind of skirts.
So why men should not wearing old "men's" garment?
