Has “Gay” Lost It’s Meaning?

Oct 11, 2009Breaking Newzzz

A couple of months ago, I made the declaration that I was longer gay…homosexual yes…gay no. Click here to refresh your memory of the 15 plus reasons including:

  1. I don’t go to discos on weeknights, well, or most weekends for that matter.
  2. I don’t cruise the internet, just write for it.
  3. Don’t own any Diesel anything.

This weekend, I could not help thinking how being being gay is, in fact, so different than being homosexual. Take for instance the Human Rights Campaign dinner last night where Barak Obama spoke, and made yet another vow (empty or otherwise) to lift the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the military. First of all, call me crazy, but any fag or dyke that wants to put themselves in harms way should be welcomed with open arms…they’re nuts…like those country yahoos, so, by all means…ships ahoy. I could not imagine sitting in that room as a homosexual and listen to that lip service and act like our president really understands us. Come on Mary…get real. He is a president…not the Messiah. Change is in the actions YOU take to make your life better.

I looked up the origins of the word Gay.

Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French gai, of Germanic origin; akin to Old High German gāhi quick, sudden
Date: 14th century
1 a : happily excited : merry <in a gay mood> b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits <a bird’s gay spring song>
2 a : bright, lively <gay sunny meadows> b : brilliant in color
3 : given to social pleasures; also : licentious
4 a : homosexual <gay men> b : of, relating to, or used by homosexuals <the gay rights movement> <a gay bar>

People and meadows have been gay since the 14th century and somewhere in the 1960’s gay men co-opted that word as their signature piece. Now we have gays just sitting there, brilliant in color, listening to the HRC bla bla, which could not have induced high spirits, like a bird’s spring song.  Barney Frank, the big fat politico gay, who is also homosexual, said that gays should not march on Washington. Well, I just give up. In the 1970’s, when we were giving to social pleasures,  gays took to the streets, and made tracks. We got our rights, were in vogue, and ran night life. We were literally…amazing. Now, gay seems more politically correct than political. More hip to be square than hip and in many cases unjustifiably pompous. Hence, I am not gay anymore…just homosexual…and even that begs the question…since hitting that certain age when homosexuals become invisible…to gays.

That takes some getting used to doesn't it? I have been invisible for a while, but the ability of gays to look right through you still amazes me. Oh well, I am sure I will learn to like the invisibility some day and then I will get off my perma-diet.
