More Bla Bla on "world fashion week"

You know when you get to a website that says “Under Construction”? Well, it is kind of like that today as I return from Camp (and – mean camp) Gitchya-Gitchya Ya-Ya. It was fun while it lasted and alas, back to reality a.k.a. full on fashion week nonsense. See you manana or later.… Read More »

No matter what is happening on the world stage, here in the United States, we always manage to drum up and incredibly unimportant story that effects very few people, but somehow becomes front page news…a.k.a. fodder for the tabloids. In a world where innocent people are being slaughtered, human rights negated, children being trafficked and wars abound, Katie Lee Joel and Yigal Azrouel managed to become a big story in the daily rags and naturally, I couldn’t resist such a riveting headline. Who could? Where shall I start.… Read More »

While piddling through the morning papers, I came upon what New York Magazine predicts are the Nine Trends for Fall Fashion. Sure there were other major ridiculous stories that were begging for my attention to comment on. Like that buffoon in Obama’s Military Office who arranged for the $350,000 photo shoot for Air Force One, a ridiculous story that I commented on weeks ago and wondered then why this guy was not fired on the spot. And there’s the piece about Celebrity Twitter Overkill. I mean…please. These celebrities going on Larry King to say they Tweet to bring voice to… Read More »

Of the many newly established “holidays”, Earth Day is the little holiday that could. Yes, it has accomplished tons of global awareness since 1970, when it started, as a way to instill fear that the end of the world is nigh. Since then, the Earth Global Network successfully promotes the consciousness that we must all do our part to save the world. And hopefully meet Leonardo DiCaprio in the process. However, the term “Green” has become so overused, it’s almost passe. Even Vanity Fair has stopped doing their “green issue”, currently featuring Giselle Bunchen on the cover, Miss Green herself…as… Read More »

I don’t mean to go on and on about Patsy and Edina but surely you have to agree that what the world needs now is a lot more of them than, let’s say, Michael Phelps or A-Rod. Would someone please tell me why I should call someone that spent his waking hours in the water (avoiding his overbearing mom, no doubt) or an uber-jock who shoots roids (shot, whatever) my hero? Why because sports is such a heroic fete? Captain Sully, absolutely gets my vote as hero extraordinaire along with the drew of Flight 1549. But those other two? Not doing it.… Read More »

So next up is NY Fashion Week. And an interesting one it will be. You have Marc Jacobs cutting his audience by two-thirds, Vera Wang not doing a show, Betsey Johnson fleeing the tents, independant designers bellying up. I mean…what?!?  Has the world come to a fierce end? With all the doom and gloom in the financial headlines, WWD is beginning to sound like Chicken Little. But, this is the New York Fashion Week, for Christ sakes. The smoke-and-mirrors, Emperor’s-new-clothes capital of the world. We can’t act like we’ve been licked by this stupid recession. We have to “act as… Read More »

It’s over…and the fat lady sang. (Beth Ditto at Jean Paul Gaultier.) As World Fashion Week came to a close in Paris, the question is, “Who wins the I Mean…What?!? Best Collection Spring ’11. It is a toss up between a few designers that seem to be hell bent on showing conceptual nonsense or what I call Pre-Halloween. It is astonishing that companies like Wunderkind (whose name seems to be from a time gone by) and Maison Martin Margiela (ditto) even bother to spend whatever dollars to show pieces that are preposterous, unnecessary and frankly an insult to injury….as in,… Read More »

You must watch this Taiwanese boy sing I Will Always Love You. Hello my fearless flock of fashion following friends. What I love about World Fashion Week is that we get to see so many beautiful collections from all over the world such as New York, Milan, and Paris. Sure we also see lots of nonsense from other ports of call such as Madrid Fashion Week, Australia, Brazil, Lakme Fashion Week (India) and assorted Middle Eastern countries. But today, let’s discuss Paris. With the economy still in turmoil, many of the collections have been fiercely edited, and buyer optimism is reflected on increased orders. And frankly, the blogosphere is having a positive… Read More »

Has the parade passed us by? Is it over yet? Can we breathe? Can the dresses just stop careening down the runways now? Damn, World Fashion Week is endless. Thankfully they saved the best for last…and no, I do not mean Louis Vuitton. That shizz screams Emperor plenty. That, or, since he is so big in Japan, there is a touch of Harajuku sprinkled in the looks. Besides, LV is far more interested in the bags than the clothes. If you remember correctly, all the LV ensembles worn by the likes of Madonna, Lake Bell (zzz) and Leighton Meester ended… Read More »
