More Bla Bla on "elizabeth taylor"

Tony Curtis and Eddie Fisher passed last week. Having experienced the passing-on of both my parents, I wanted to take this moment from commenting on Paris Fashion Week and acknowledge Carrie Fisher and Jamie Lee Curtis‘s sad losses. Those two have so much in common: Raised by America’s Sweethearts, 1950’s iconic Hollywood couples Divorce and scandal Both in recovery Have good careers on their own right Whatever the circumstances, no matter how unavailable our fathers were growing up (I have then in common with them, too), we are never prepared for our parents dying. It is not in our DNA.… Read More »

Milan Heralds In The Mu-Mu Gown

Reading all the reviews from the Milan runways, the term “seventies” is bandied about quite a bit. Duh…it was “The Only” time in fashion. A few major trends are spilling off the catwalks in Milan that are clear and present, most notably, color. But not just pops of color, rather, full-on kaleidoscopes of prints and vibrant hues of exhausting jewel tones on acid. Acid…that is very 70’s, too…1973 to be exact, when my third addiction kicked in. But I digress. One recurring look on many runways that I noticed was more 60’s than 70’s really, and that is the revival… Read More »

The 11th Commandment

Thou Shalt Not Take The Name Of Elizabeth Taylor In Vain When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the Fifteen Commandments, as depicted in Mel Brooks‘ History of the World Part 1, there were five commandments that never saw the light of day. (Watch this short clip to learn about this little known biblical fact in Exodus 20:2–17.) httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5aO7sswvJo Anyhoo, one of those laws as commanded by the Lord himself was: Thou shalt not take the name of Elizabeth Taylor in vain. Sadly, we have become a society not dissimilar to those Israelite hedonists running rampant in the desert,… Read More »

There is a huge firestorm brewing over the casting choice for the upcoming movie, Cleopatra: A Life. The role is going to Angelina Jolie…duh…best choice on Earth. Sure beats her taking on the role of Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz remake, that’s for sure. So now we are embroiled in a politically correct hub-bub by Essence magazine contributing writer, Shirea Carroll. She by Shirea is up in arms that the role of Cleopatra is going, yet again, to a white actress, in the tradition of Elizabeth Taylor, Claudette Colbert and Vivien Leigh. Ms. Carroll had… Read More »

You know you have hit the big top when a fragrance bears your name, or your pet’s name, or your favorite childhood memory’s name of some such nonsense. You all know my aversion to celebrity fashion designers. Now I am officially adding celebrity schtoonk-meisters to the list of things that make me say fotz or “ewww”. Let me start by mentioning my favorite exception to this parade, none other than Dame Elizabeth Taylor. When Elizabeth created White Diamonds, she was pretty much out of the movie business, still  gorgeous and well…friggen Liz Taylor. Don’t even try to put Sarah Jessica… Read More »

What could be more devastating to the American public than finding out that our reigning queen of all media…not you Perez Hilton, sorry girl…but Oprah Winfrey, has been exaggerating on all points of light about her upbringing in an effort to gain sympathy and trust, hence viewers galore? Nothing. According to Kitty Kelley, another queen, but her sovereignty is Unauthorized Biography-land, Ms. Winfrey has created a world of tragedy and drama, so much so, that violins will be playing. Kelley has dug into the lives of Jackie O, Frank Sinatra, the Bush family, Elizabeth Taylor, well, see the through line… Read More »

Mary Alice Stephenson: From The Red Carpet To Her Closet

I want to be Mary Alice Stephenson when I come back to Earth in my next life. Tall, blond, female, smart, beautiful, industrious, glamorous…need I say more? Either I want to be just like her or a French poodle in a Jewish household on Long Island. Both lives are charmed. I met Mary Alice at a fund-raising event…you see…she is perfect…and we have since kept in touch. Recently, we both were speaking on a panel about the future of the fashion industry. There she was, clad in red Calvin Klein fierceness. I mentioned interviewing her for IMW-TV, though at that… Read More »

Oh, if only I was reporting live, sitting front row at these farkakte fashion weeks from across the globe. But alas, here I sit, shivering me timbers in New York City, ogling images of assorted cat walk tragedies. I have enjoyed bringing you coverage from the “Other” Fashion Weeks including Tranny Fashion Week, Los Angeles Fashion Week, Madrid Fashion Week, New Zealand Fashion Week (?!?), Lakme Fashion Week, Pakistan Fashion Week, Abu Dabi Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, Arabia Fashion Week and the upcoming, not to be missed, Aspen Fashion Week. And I say “Other” as opposed to “Ridiculous“. (Please,… Read More »

Not many New Yorkers, or humans, for that matter, will have had the pleasure, or rather, the great fortune of seeing Cate Blanchett in A Streetcar Names Desire. The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) was lucky enough to feature the production, directed by Liv Ullman at the BAM Harvey Theater, the coolest venue. I have long been obsessed with great actresses. It started as a child when I happened to notice Bette Davis’ eyes peering from the television screen in Dark Victory. With the blink of those eyes, my life changed. Bette Davis was my first obsession, followed by food,… Read More »
