Sex And The City-Part 2…Ouch

Out-takes from the Sex in the City 2 set. Oy.

Out-takes of Sarah Jessica Parker from the Sex in the City 2...The Prequel? Oy vey. Clearly they are shooting flashback scenes.

Now that we have gotten through New York Fashion Week, and speaking of fashion, I wonder how the filming of Sex and the City 2 is coming along. In the midst of all the mayhem and fabulousness of the week, I saw images from the set of the film and just needed to get through the shows and my doubled up work-load before I addressed them. Look, I am a gay man, so naturally I am looking forward to the sequel…or I am afraid prequel…as these images show. I love these ballsy independent woman. I can also appreciate the fawn-like Charlotte’s of the world who just want to live happily ever after in a state of denial…located mostly on the Upper East Side. But what Charlotte wants, in truth we all want, but it just looks different in most cases. Charlotte’s yearning for happiness is universal.

I mean...what?!? Yikes. Fotz. Okideer. All of the above.

Actually, that is what makes these characters so palpable. They each speak to a different part of our psyche, making them all relate-able and sympathetic. As a writer, I know how difficult that is to achieve. The SATC franchise is chock full of fabulous qualities, and in the end, the clothes are just set dressing to attract people like me…and millions of others like you. I guess (and my fear is) they needed to go back to the 80’s to set basic context and storyline. That, I am hoping, is not the kiss of death, when you look at these pictures. All I can say…is, “Oy vey iz meer.” Will the audience be kind and not judge? Look who I’m asking. Yikes. Will the fact they are a bunch of middle-aged women get in the way of watching them try to look twenty? I mean…you tell me. I am still going to support the girls but I can only hope that in the filming and editing process, they used enough filters and Vaseline on the lenses to diffuse the situation. Actually, what I am hoping for is that these images are the girls in modern day New York City attending an 80’s costume party, where as like the last scene in Sex and the City Part 1, they all regroup walking down Fifth Avenue, reconnected, rejoined and rejoicing in their fabulousness.

Sure, we can all be reminded how horrendous 80's fashion was...even though it's on trend...whatever...but we don't need these gals to show us.
