“It’s All About Paris Bitches”

Lanvin. Amazing. Period.

In all my thousand years on Earth, I have not felt such a palpable energy about Paris Fashion Week. With Lanvin so breathtaking, Rick Owens beyond cool and Balenciaga so interesting, I am green with envy at the editors sitting front row at the upcoming Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior shows. Relegated to sitting behind my desk like many sad bloggers, I can at least rejoice at the heralded return to the glory days of Paris fashion.

There was a time when New York Fashion Week stole a bit of the thunder, when celebrities were not ruining the front rows, rather gracing them. A time before Mercedes Benz and IMG sold off each corner of the tents to a willing sponsor who wanted to “align with the fashion crowd”. Remember when Kohler the toilet company was a lead sponsor and they branded their hat box toilet all over town? Flushion? WTF? Since then New York has lost its luster. Sure it might be bigger than ever. Great that more manufacturing is happening in New York, thank you Olsen Twins, The Row. Overall, this circus has tuned into a whirlwind of what-was-once-fabulous into a washed down version that we can call drabulous. Standing in front of Lincoln Center with wanna-bees dressed up just to get their sartorial moment has this feeling of desperation rather than fantastic.

I get it, individuality of expression is everything. Outside the box is the new black. “Catch me, catch me” is the new catch phrase. I am not condemning anyone for being who they are or wanting to be someone else. I am just reminded of when New York’s fashion scene was insular and extremely cool. Not a social media-ed version of what is. Now that reality stars supersede what truly is great is why I pine for the old days. Hey, I get as much joy of watching the Lady Gaga-ing of our youth culture rising while the sun is setting over Madonna. I just think that Madonna’s rise was far and away much cooler.

Back to Paris. Kanye West is not showing this season, since he is probably too busy weeding out the Hootchie Mama dresses from Kim Kardashian’s wardrobe, though not quickly enough. And the anticipation of the final days of Paris Fashion Week has hit a fever pitch. @KirnaZabete said it best in their pre-Dior Tweet: Madness in front of Raf Simmons first @christiandior RTW show. Photographers going crazy over the amazing Ines de la Frassange…. Everyone is so chic and dressed up. Such a great fashion moment!

Rick. Owens. Fierce.
